Knowledge may be defined as a form of relation between two entities—the subject and the object. One may even suggest that the object is, in a sense, reflected in the subject’s consciousness, thereby establishing a reciprocal relation between the two poles. From this perspective, the capacity of any material entity to respond to or register the presence of another, in accordance with principles such as action and reaction, may be understood as a minimal form of knowledge or recognition.
