Vital Tally

What is the number of men,
the full number of men,
those who have been
and those who shall be?

If Adam was the first of them,
who shall be the last?
And what shall his name be called?

Shall he also die,
as all before him ?
And in the days of his watch,
in the hours of his waking,

shall he remember
that I was here,
that I was of his house,
that I was of his flesh?
